The story's twisting end is also unique, especially as both characters are surprised by self-growth and freedom. Emmies story is interwoven with that of Katie, the girl Emmie kind of wishes she could be: popular, smiley, athletic. When Emmie says, "I'm trying to ignore him," Katie counters with "It's not working.
